Last week, I showed you how easy it was to dye a leather bridle. I had purchased this vintage pony bridle that was a perfect match for our vintage 1950’s pony saddle except for one thing. It was the wrong color.
Today I am going to show you my finished product but before we get to that I would like to go over a few of the products that I forgot to mention.
Last week I forgot to mention one very important tool when dying a leather bridle. Gloves. Yes gloves, I had an old pair of surgical type gloves, and when I say old, I mean old. First of all, they where not the correct size, they were way to big. Second they had been in the box way too long and started to dissinagrate and fall apart. After a few minutes of frustration, I donned my gloves and went commando! Yep, I dyed my leather bridle with bare hands. Guess what, that was 2 weeks ago that I dyed my leather bridle and I still have bits of black dye imbedded in my finger nails and cuticals. Loud and clear, you need well fitting gloves, with out tiny holes.
Another helpful tool is alcohol. No I don’t advise grabbing a glass of wine or your favorite beer for this project, you need plain ol’ rubbing alcohol. Prior to dying the leather, you need to strip the leather of any oils so the dye can penetrate. I unfortunately did not do this but my bridle was pretty old and dry to start with. For a new bridle, that has been recently oiled, I would recommend this.

I just love the old, new bridle. It is a great match for the 1950’s pony saddle that it is to be paired with and perfect for up coming projects.
